Green River

The Berkshire Region has two Green Rivers – one in Great Barrington in the southern Berkshires, and this one in the North with headwaters in Hancock, MA and New Ashford, MA. The West Branch originates in Hancock, MA and joins the East Branch (that originates on the slopes of Mt. Greylock in New Ashford, MA) at the 5-Corners in South Williamstown. The river then flows northward to its confluence with the Hoosic River. While the Green River received raw sewage as late as the 1960s, it is currently classified as a cold-water fishery with water suitable for primary recreation such as swimming.
